The 129th birth anniversary of renowned social reformer, political leader, and freedom fighter Jana Neta Hijam Irawat was observed across Manipur today, with the main event organised by the Irawat Celebration Committee (ICC) in association with the Manipur State Shumang Leela Council at Iboyaima Shanglen, Palace Compound, Imphal East.
The observance began with a procession rally carrying a life-size photo of Irawat from Irawat Bhawan to the event venue, where participants paid floral tributes. This was followed by a march past featuring 37 contingents, including students from various schools, women’s organisations, and professional band parties.
Addressing the media at the sidelines of the event, ICC Chairman Dr Moirangthem Nara lauded the courage, ability, and sacrifices of Jana Neta Hijam Irawat for the motherland. “People’s appreciation of his values, ethos, ideology, and principles continues to grow even though he is no longer with us,” he said.
Dr Nara highlighted Irawat’s role in promoting equality in society and his unwavering commitment to the unity, oneness, and integrity of the state. “Manipur has been facing socio-economic and political challenges. It is high time we revisit and reflect on Irawat’s contributions and his vision for the state,” he added.
He further emphasised that the ideals of Jana Neta Hijam Irawat should serve as guiding principles in addressing contemporary challenges, as his ideas for social, economic, and political reforms remain relevant in today’s socio-political landscape. Dr Nara expressed gratitude for the support in organising the event, noting that society would benefit if everyone embodied at least some of Irawat’s dedication and love for the betterment of the community.
As part of the observance, awards were distributed to distinguished individuals and associations in recognition of their contributions in their respective fields. Meanwhile, across every locality in Manipur, residents paid floral tributes to Irawat’s portrait to mark the occasion.
The anniversary served as a reminder of Hijam Irawat’s enduring legacy and his pivotal role in shaping the social and political fabric of Manipur.
