Police in Manipur produced the main suspect in the brutal killing of a seven-year-old internally displaced girl before the Chief Judicial Magistrate in Imphal East on Monday, April 6. The court granted five days' police remand to aid the ongoing probe.
The accused is identified as Laishram Langamba (28), an internally displaced person from Churachandpur and presently taking shelter at Akampat Relief Camp in Imphal East.
The child's body was discovered under a bridge at Singjamei, just metres from her relief camp, less than 24 hours after she went missing. The grim find sent shockwaves through the community, with family members and fellow camp residents breaking down in grief and demanding immediate justice.
Officers from Imphal East and West districts launched a rapid search operation. Crucially, they scoured CCTV footage from nearby spots, which helped them pinpoint and apprehend the accused.
The victim, originally from Moreh in Tengnoupal district, had been living in the Imphal East relief camp since ethnic clashes erupted across Manipur in May 2023, forcing thousands to flee their homes.
Authorities emphasise that investigations continue to uncover full details.
