In a significant step towards promoting indigenous language education, the Thadou-Kuki Ability Enhancement Course–I (AEC-I) textbook titled “Pao Hetgilna le Kijahmatna” (Knowledge of Language and Communication) was formally released for undergraduate students under the Four Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUGP) 2025, in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework (NCF).
The textbook, prescribed for BA, B.Sc. and B.Com first-semester students, has been edited by noted academic and language scholar Dr. Ngamkhohao Haokip. The book was released by Dr. Seikhohao Kipgen, Principal of Presidency College, Motbung, at the Thadou Kuki Literature Society (TKLS) Head Office located at Elite Higher Secondary School, Kanggui, in Kangpokpi district.
Dr. Ngamkhohao Haokip, a Ph.D holder specialising in socio-political studies of tribal communities, is currently the Principal-cum-Administrator of the Eklavya Model Residential School, Gamnom Sapormeina, under the National Education Society for Tribal Students, Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Government of India. He also serves as the Chairman of the Thadou Kuki Literature Society.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Kipgen described the publication as a landmark academic contribution that strengthens the place of indigenous languages within the national higher education framework. He lauded the editorial work and said the inclusion of Thadou-Kuki under the AEC curriculum reflects the spirit of NEP 2020 in preserving linguistic diversity while enhancing students’ communication skills.
The book was dedicated by Rev. Ngamneo Haokip, Pastor of the Kuki Baptist Church (KBC), who highlighted the cultural, intellectual and spiritual importance of mother-tongue education. He stressed that language is a repository of identity, history and values, and urged students and educational institutions to preserve and promote their linguistic heritage.
Designed specifically for undergraduate learners, “Pao Hetgilna le Kijahmatna” focuses on foundational language skills, effective communication and academic competence. The textbook aligns with the multidisciplinary and competency-based approach envisioned under the FYUGP framework of NEP 2020.
The release ceremony was attended by academicians, educators, church leaders, TKLS members and well-wishers, who hailed the publication as a historic step towards mainstreaming Thadou-Kuki language studies in higher education.
The Thadou Kuki Literature Society reaffirmed its commitment to the development, standardisation and promotion of the Thadou-Kuki language and literature, expressing hope that the textbook would inspire further scholarly work and strengthen indigenous knowledge systems within the national academic discourse.
