Amid fresh tensions in Manipur’s Ukhrul district, newly appointed Cabinet Minister Kongthoujam Govindas on Monday, February 9, asserted that the volatile situation in the Litan area would be brought under control, with additional security forces deployed to restore law and order.
Speaking to reporters at a press conference held at the BJP Manipur Unit office, Govindas said the government was closely monitoring the situation following clashes between two communities that have continued over the past few days. The violence reportedly intensified in the early hours of Monday, with miscreants allegedly setting fire to multiple houses in the area.
Expressing concern over the developments, the minister said the state administration was taking firm steps to prevent further escalation. He informed that newly appointed Deputy Chief Minister Loshi Dikho had already visited the violence-hit areas in Ukhrul to take stock of the ground situation.
Govindas added that he had personally communicated with the Superintendent of Police of Ukhrul district, who assured him that adequate measures were being taken and that the situation would be brought under control. Additional security forces have been deployed as part of precautionary measures to prevent further incidents.
Appealing for restraint, the minister urged citizens to refrain from violence, stressing that Manipur has long been home to diverse ethnic communities living together peacefully. He called upon people to focus on development and communal harmony rather than conflict.
According to information from reliable sources on the ground, nearly 30 houses have been reportedly gutted in the violence so far, with incidents of arson continuing into the afternoon. Authorities remain on high alert as efforts continue to stabilize the situation.
