Musician Chongtham Vikram’s body brought to Imphal, family seeks strict punishment against perpetrators

The mortal remains of renowned Manipuri musician Chongtham Vikram Singh, who died after an alleged assault in Delhi on September 7, were brought to Imphal on Wednesday, September 9 where family members, friends and well-wishers gathered at Imphal International Airport to receive the body.

The atmosphere at the airport remained sombre as relatives and supporters waited for the arrival of Vikram’s body. Several mourners broke down as the mortal remains were brought home.

Vikram was allegedly assaulted in Delhi’s Sunlight Colony on September 7. Delhi Police have arrested eight people in connection with the case.

Speaking after receiving his brother’s body, Chongtham Vivek said the death had caused deep grief not only to the family but also to people across Manipur and the wider music fraternity.

“This is a very sad and painful moment for everyone in the state and across the country. His death is not only a loss for our family but also for the entire music fraternity,” Vivek said.

He demanded strict punishment for those responsible and urged the authorities to ensure that the investigation and legal proceedings are completed swiftly.

The arrests have not quelled public anger in Manipur, where people have called for stringent punishment for all those found guilty in accordance with the law.

Vikram’s mortal remains will be taken to his residence at Thangmeiband Lourungpurel in Imphal West, where the last rites will be performed.

The incident has also triggered concern across the Northeast, with people raising questions over alleged racial discrimination and violence faced by people from the region in other parts of the country.

Several people have appealed for greater awareness and sensitivity towards people from the Northeast, saying no one should be targeted or subjected to violence because of their appearance or identity.

As demands for justice continue, mourners and supporters have also called for an end to violence and discrimination against people from the Northeast, urging that such an incident should not be repeated.
