Meghalaya Chief Minister and National People’s Party (NPP) president Conrad Sangma arrived in Imphal today for a two-day visit aimed at evaluating the current situation in Manipur and exploring ways to restore lasting peace.
Speaking to the media at Imphal International Airport, Sangma said his primary objective is to meet with local leaders, community representatives, and stakeholders to understand the ground situation and promote normalcy in the state.
“Several efforts have been made to resolve the crisis. While some progress has been achieved, challenges remain. More engagement is needed to ensure complete peace,” he said, highlighting the role NPP intends to play in stabilising the state.
When asked about expanding NPP’s presence in Manipur, Sangma emphasised that political growth depends on the people’s support. “Our priority is restoring peace and normalcy. Elections are far off; serving the people comes first,” he said.
Sangma is accompanied by NPP National General Secretary (Organisation) Paknga Bage, National Secretary Saidul Khan, and National People’s Youth Front president Nickey Nongkhlaw. The delegation arrived at 12:45 pm.
According to the itinerary, Sangma will first meet with Meitei civil society organisations (CSOs) at Hotel Classic Grande, followed by a meeting with Naga CSOs at 1:45 pm. At 2:30 pm, he will interact with internally displaced persons (IDPs) from Moreh, Churachandpur, and other areas sheltering in the valley.
At 5 pm, Sangma is scheduled to meet Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla at Raj Bhavan to discuss measures for restoring peace and stability. Later, at 7 pm, he will hold a joint meeting with NPP MLAs, state executives, and party functionaries to discuss party strengthening and strategies ahead of the 2027 Manipur Legislative Assembly elections.
On October 10, Sangma will hold a press conference before leaving for Dimapur. En route, he plans to engage with Kuki CSOs and IDPs at Kangpokpi, and have lunch at the residence of the late NPP Manipur president N Kayisii in Senapati.
