One person was killed and at least three others were injured in a clash between members of the Meitei and Meitei Pangal communities in Manipur’s Thoubal district late on Sunday, October 18 night. The violence, reported from Khangabok and Sangaiyumpham villages, also left several houses and vehicles burnt, prompting the district administration to impose prohibitory orders and deploy additional security forces.
The deceased has been identified as Laishram Rakesh, 24, who reportedly sustained pellet gun injuries after being shot by unidentified miscreants. He later succumbed to his injuries, according to sources. At least three other people were injured in the incident.
The clash reportedly occurred around 11.30 pm on Sunday after a group of people allegedly began pelting stones at a ground in Khangabok village, under Thoubal police station, where a concert was being held.
The incident subsequently escalated into violence involving members of the two communities, the Meiteis and the Meitei Pangals, also known as Manipuri Muslims.
The district administration imposed prohibitory orders in the affected areas from 11 pm on Sunday to prevent further escalation. Additional state and central security personnel were deployed to maintain law and order.
The situation was reported to be under control by Monday morning, although security arrangements remained in place to prevent further incidents.
Further details about the circumstances leading to the clash and the identities of those involved were awaited.
