A protest demanding justice for six Naga civilians allegedly abducted from Leilon Vaiphei in Kangpokpi district and subsequently killed turned violent at Namdilong in Imphal West on August 20.
The protest was organised by the Joint Tribe Council and Native People Committee. Protesters were demanding justice for the victims and stringent action against those responsible for the killings.
According to reports, a scuffle broke out between security personnel and protesters even before the protest could begin. Security forces subsequently used tear gas shells to disperse the protesters, leaving several people injured.
The Liangmai Naga Council, Manipur, in a press release issued on Thursday, condemned what it described as the use of excessive force against peaceful protesters. The council alleged that the Rapid Action Force (RAF) and other security personnel used tear gas and force against the gathering around noon.
The council claimed that four civilians sustained serious injuries in the incident. The injured were identified as Wikhonliu (36), Wilobou (33), Chunwibou and Masenwangbou (44) of Makhan.
The Liangmai Naga Council has demanded the immediate release of detained villagers, an impartial investigation into the incident, identification of those responsible and appropriate legal action. It has also sought adequate medical assistance for those injured.
Meanwhile, the bodies of the six Naga civilians reportedly remain at the JNIMS morgue, with their families and community organisations continuing to demand justice.
The Liangmai Naga Council said it would continue its democratic agitation until the demands under the UNC charter of demands are fulfilled.
