Protest rallies were held across parts of Manipur on Thursday, April 9 condemning the recent bomb attack at Tronglaobi in Bishnupur district of Manipur, that killed two children. Demonstrators took to the streets, burning tyres and raising slogans demanding immediate action against those responsible for the incident.
A major rally was organised under the aegis of the All Manipur United Clubs Organisation, in association with several civil society groups. The procession began near Kwakeithel and drew participation from a large number of people, including children holding posters of the victims. Protesters called for the immediate arrest of the perpetrators and stronger measures to ensure civilian safety.
Security forces intervened and halted the rally as it attempted to proceed further along its route. However, a delegation comprising representatives of AMUCO and other organisations was later allowed to proceed under escort to meet Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand at his office.
According to an official statement issued by the Chief Minister’s office, the meeting was attended by representatives of multiple civil society organisations, including Manipur Students' Federation, Poirei Leimarol, Committee on Human Rights, and All Manipur Anti-Atrocities Women’s Association. State Home Minister K. Govindas Singh and other legislators were also present.
The Chief Minister described the interaction as “constructive and substantive,” stating that the concerns raised by civil society groups were discussed in detail. He termed the Tronglaobi incident as “deeply unfortunate” and acknowledged that it had disrupted ongoing peace-building efforts in the state.
Emphasising the government’s response, he said the situation is being treated with “utmost seriousness,” despite the administration having assumed office only recently. He further stated that the state government remains in close coordination with Union Home Minister Amit Shah and that all necessary steps are being taken to address the situation.
Reiterating the government’s commitment, the Chief Minister said that those responsible for the attack would be identified and dealt with strictly in accordance with the law.
