Manipur's Kangpokpi district witnessed heightened tension on Wednesday, December 17 after a cyclist from the Meitei community allegedly attempted to pass through the Kuki-Zo-dominated region as part of a self-announced “Manipur Peace Route” mission, triggering strong resistance from local residents.
The cyclist, identified as Malem Thongam, reportedly sought to traverse the district, prompting immediate protests along National Highway-2 near Brigadier M. Thomas Ground. Women from the local community spearheaded the protest, taking to the streets and vowing to block any attempt by the cyclist to cross the district. The demonstration soon drew participation from men across nearby localities, turning the busy highway stretch into a site of continuous public vigil.
Protesters asserted that the cyclist would not be allowed to pass through Kangpokpi, describing the timing and chosen route of the mission as provocative, particularly during the Christmas festive season. They maintained that their actions were preventive in nature and aimed at averting any possible escalation of communal tension in an already sensitive and fragile environment.
“We are peace-loving people. During Christmas, we do not want any activity that may create tension. We are here to protect peace in Kangpokpi,” a protester said during the demonstration.
Earlier, the Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU) had issued a strong warning to the authorities, urging the immediate suspension of the proposed cycling route through Kangpokpi. The committee cautioned that the Kuki-Zo community would not be held responsible for any untoward incident should the event be allowed to proceed despite strong objections from local residents.
As of the time of filing this report, the situation near Brigadier M. Thomas Ground remained tense but under control, with protesters continuing their vigil and insisting they would maintain their stand unless authorities intervened to prevent the cyclist from entering the district.
Meanwhile, no official statement has been issued by the administration so far. Security agencies remain on alert and are closely monitoring the situation to prevent any deterioration of law and order.
