KHNAM urges KHADC to check labour licences

Following the publication of complete draft of National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam, the Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) has urged the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) to increase checking of labour licences issued by it in order to tackle the menace of influx of illegal immigrants into Meghalaya.

The KHNAM said it had been conducting “surprise checks” across various locations in the State.

The organisation explained that after publication of complete NRC draft in Assam, the possibility of suspected illegal immigrants entering Meghalaya had increased manifold.

It pointed out that over the past five decades Meghalaya had become a safe haven for illegal immigrants who come in the form of labourers.
