SHILLONG: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Tuesday stated that the allegation about the bags of rice seized in an Assam factory was meant for NFSA & COVID Relief for Meghalaya, is incorrect.

Recently, Assam police had claimed to have busted a scam involving supply of government rice by seizing one lakh bags of the cereal from a private godown at Boko in Kamrup district.

The rice is claimed to be a share of the Food Corporation of India’s Meghalaya unit.

Reportedly, the cereal was being repacked for selling purpose.

Debunking the claims, the Chief Minister said that the consignment of rice is not a part of the NFSA or of Covid Relief from the centre.

"Our stocks have been received in advance for the entire month of June", he added.

"The alleged "1 Lakh bags" of seized rice meant for children & mothers is actually 33,000 bags of rice sourced from FCI & meant for the production of micronutrient energy-dense fortified food for children. Stocks of the products have already been received for the 1st quarter", said Sangma.

He further informed that the seized rice sourced from FCI was allotted to the approved company. "It is their responsibility to provide the Govt with the finished products", he added.

Sangma stated that he has asked the company to give clarification on the matter.

He added that the government makes sure that the company supplies quality tested and certified finished food products on a regular basis to the State and ensure its supply is uninterrupted.
