The Koch tribal community in Meghalaya’s Garo Hills region observed its traditional Pabuni festival on Sunday, April 26 at Gandipara village.
The festival, organised by the Meghalaya Koch Association and the Meghalaya Koch Students’ Union, holds significant importance for the community. It is marked by prayers offered to God for a bountiful harvest, environmental well-being, and prosperity in the coming season. Community members also pray for peace, happiness, and welfare across all sections of society.
From early morning, young boys and girls dressed in traditional Koch attire gathered near a sacred peepal tree, the designated site for the rituals. The participants performed customary prayers and sought blessings as part of the long-standing tradition.
Organisers stated that despite the cultural importance of the festival, they have not received government support for the event. However, they expressed optimism about receiving assistance from the Meghalaya government in the future to help preserve and promote their cultural practices.
The Pabuni festival continues to serve as an important occasion for reinforcing community identity while promoting values of harmony and collective well-being.
