Football fever gripped the eastern region as devoted supporters from Meghalaya undertook an arduous journey to witness Argentine legend Lionel Messi during his visit to Kolkata on December 13, highlighting the sport's massive following in the northeastern state.
The visit sparked extraordinary scenes as fans travelled hundreds of kilometres, with many citing financial constraints that would have otherwise prevented them from meeting their idol abroad. One supporter, who has followed Messi's career since the age of 14, expressed the emotional significance of the moment.
"We are from Meghalaya. We are very excited. We are huge fans of Messi. We are very happy," the fan said, her voice trembling with emotion.
She added: "Thankful that Messi came to Kolkata... we can't afford to go out to meet him... we struggled a lot to be here today. I have been a fan since I was 14!"
Football enjoys cult status in Meghalaya, where the sport transcends mere recreation to become a cultural cornerstone. The hilly state has produced numerous talented players and maintains passionate local leagues, with villages often coming to a standstill during major matches. The region's obsession with the beautiful game rivals that of traditional footballing states like Goa and Kerala.
Messi's Kolkata appearance drew thousands, with supporters arriving from across India. The eight-time Ballon d'Or winner's visit provided a rare opportunity for fans from smaller states to witness one of football's greatest players without international travel.
