Sonam Raghuvanshi, who surrendered in Madhya Pradesh after being named as a prime suspect in the alleged murder of her husband Raja during their honeymoon in Meghalaya, has been staunchly defended by her family.
Her father, speaking to reporters, claimed that the marriage had taken place with the full consent of both families and strongly denied her involvement in the crime.
"My daughter is innocent. I have full trust in her - she cannot do this," he said. He accused the Meghalaya government of misleading the public from the very beginning and reiterated that his daughter had not been arrested in Meghalaya, but had instead surrendered herself at a dhaba in Ghazipur.
“She reached Ghazipur on her own and called her brother for help. The police picked her up from the dhaba around 2 am last night. She was not on the run, she asked for her brother and cried for him,” he added.
Questioning the Meghalaya Police's version of events, he said, "Why would my daughter go on a honeymoon if she had any intention to kill? The police are fabricating stories."
The grieving father further revealed that the family was planning to meet with Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister and later Union Home Minister Amit Shah to demand a CBI investigation into the case.
“We are confident that a fair investigation will prove her innocence. Once the CBI takes over, the truth will come out, and all officers involved in this conspiracy will be held accountable,” he asserted.
Meanwhile, Sonam's mother, Sangeeta, said, "We are thankful that she has been found, but the pain still remains... Now we want to know who was behind Raja's murder. There's sorrow even though she has returned, we lost Raja."
The case, which has sparked public interest and raised questions over inter-state police coordination, continues to unfold as authorities in both Meghalaya and Madhya Pradesh examine the circumstances surrounding Raja’s mysterious death.
