In an initiative to promote menstrual hygiene and empower young women, Mellim Deficit Secondary School in South West Garo Hills District organized a menstrual hygiene awareness program on International Women's Day. As part of the initiative, the school distributed reusable sanitary pads to students and community members, marking the first such effort in the region.
The distribution drive was spearheaded by Gambegre MLA Mehtab Chandee Sangma and supported through the Chief Minister's Special Grant. The initiative aimed to provide young girls with essential resources while fostering awareness about sustainable menstrual hygiene management.
Targeting girls aged 11 to 18 from classes six to ten, the program emphasized the importance of safe and hygienic menstrual practices. Along with reusable cloth pads, the school provided informative leaflets in the local language to ensure easy understanding of proper menstrual care.
