Leader of Opposition and former Chief Minister Dr. Mukul Sangma has strongly criticized the Meghalaya government's formation of an all-party committee on proposed railway projects without prior consultation with political parties.
He emphasised that initiating stakeholder discussions without first achieving political consensus undermines the democratic process and risks overlooking key concerns raised by various groups.
Dr. Sangma argued that involving political leaders at the initial stage is essential to build consensus and avoid future unrest.
He stated, "You cannot just jump into stakeholder discussions through a committee without first holding an all-party meeting."

He further stressed that public fears over the influx and protection of indigenous rights must not be brushed aside, warning that the government's committee-first approach could derail the process of finding meaningful and sustainable solutions.
The veteran leader reiterated that committee-level discussions cannot substitute for political consensus.
He warned that skipping this vital step risks deepening public mistrust and creating more complications around the railway project. Dr. Sangma's remarks highlight the need for a more inclusive and transparent approach to infrastructure development in the state.
