Tibetan organisations based in Shillong have called on the United Nations and the international community to intervene over the human rights situation in Tibet, alleging continued restrictions on Tibetan identity, language, religion and culture under Chinese rule.
The appeal was made through a joint press statement issued on July 9 by the Regional Tibetan Youth Congress and the Regional Tibetan Women's Association.
The groups also paid tribute to Pawo Lobga Rangzen, a Tibetan man who reportedly self-immolated near the United Nations headquarters in New York on July 2. According to the organisations, the act was intended to draw international attention to the situation in Tibet.
The statement alleged that Tibetans continue to face curbs on their political freedoms and human rights, claiming that decades of Chinese policies have placed the region's cultural heritage under growing pressure.
The organisations also criticised China's Ethnic Unity and Progress Law, alleging that its implementation could further undermine Tibetan identity, language and cultural traditions.
They urged the United Nations, democratic nations and international human rights organisations to closely monitor the situation in Tibet and take appropriate action. The statement also appealed to the Government of India and the global community to support efforts aimed at preserving the Tibetan language, religion and cultural identity.
The report is based on claims made in the press statement issued by the Tibetan organisations. China had not issued an immediate official response to the allegations at the time of publication.
