The Zemabawk Auto Rickshaw Owners Association (ZAROA) in Aizawl on Tuesday, December 2 organised an assembly to promote animal welfare as part of the nationwide “Be Kind to Animals” campaign, mandated for all public transport vehicles across India.
The initiative stems from a directive issued by the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH), Government of India, requiring public transport operators to prominently display the message “Be Kind to Animals.” Officials from the State Animal Welfare Board, Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Department, and Transport Department were present to oversee the distribution of awareness materials to auto-rickshaw owners during the event.
Mizoram State Transport Secretary Er. R. Lalrammawia has already issued orders to ensure that buses, taxis, and auto-rickshaws fully comply with the directive.
Addressing the gathering, Ramzirthangi, founder of JB Foundation, the state’s only animal rescue centre, and a member of the Animal Welfare Board, underscored the moral and legal responsibilities of treating animals with compassion. She emphasised that kindness toward animals is deeply rooted in Christian values and urged stronger government engagement to promote education and awareness on animal protection.
She highlighted common violations under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, cautioning against acts such as physical abuse, overloading, and neglect of animals. Referring to the Transport of Animals Rules (1978), she said the improper transport of livestock remains a growing concern in Mizoram. She reminded transporters that moving animals without fitness certification from a qualified veterinary doctor is strictly prohibited and poses serious welfare risks.
MoRTH had notified all Chief Secretaries and Transport Commissioners/Principal Secretaries of States and Union Territories on August 25, making it mandatory for public transport vehicles nationwide to follow the campaign guidelines.
