Mizoram Lok Sabha MP Richard Vanlalhmangaihna visited the North Eastern Electric Power Corporation (NEEPCO) power generation facility at the Tuirial River on Friday, January 24 where he engaged with the officials about the plant's operations and challenges.
During the visit, NEEPCO officials informed the MP that, due to decreased rainfall over recent years, the Tuirial power plant had struggled to operate at full capacity. However, with the heavy rainfall in 2024, the reservoir reached its full capacity for the first time since the plant's inception, necessitating the opening of the spillway.
The MP was also briefed on the financial challenges faced by the Mizoram government when it initially began receiving power from NEEPCO, leading to payment issues. However, NEEPCO officials acknowledged that Mizoram is now the least indebted state among the power supply recipients, which has been greatly appreciated by the corporation.
In response, Vanlalhmangaihna urged NEEPCO officials to contribute more funds to Mizoram through their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program. He assured that he would advocate for the resolution of any ongoing issues with relevant authorities at the Centre.
Currently, NEEPCO provides employment to approximately 300 individuals from surrounding villages and is involved in infrastructure development, including building schools and hospitals, as well as supplying ambulances and computer sets to these areas.
