The Central Young Mizo Association distributed Rs 56,54,000 to various victims of the Cyclone Remal at a function held at Central YMA Hall, Tuikhuahtlang, Aizawl, on July 13.
Prof. Malsawmliana, General Secretary of the Central Young Mizo Association, which is the biggest NGO in Mizoram, reported that 37 deaths were recorded in Mizoram due to the destruction caused by cyclone Remal; and of these 29 are Mizos and eight are non-locals.
The Central YMA distributed an amount of one lakh each to 11 families of the cyclone victims and donated Rs 10,000 to Clara Zoremmawii, a 6-year-old girl who suffered injuries at a landslide at Hlimen on May 28, 2024.
Prof. Malsawmliana reported that the CYMA received a report of 309 houses and properties destroyed by the Cyclone Remal and from that a selection was made to provide relief to 142 houses destroyed. An amount of Rs. 8,64,000 was distributed as relief to 32 houses destroyed within Aizawl and 110 outside of Aizawl.
An additional amount of Rs 30,49,000 was distributed to seven Young Mizo Association branches that suffered complete destruction of houses; and Rs 1,80,000 to 18 reports received whose properties have been destroyed.
The Central YMA received 16 reports of destruction of public cemeteries, which were divided into Categories 1 and 2. An amount of Rs 50,000 each was given to 4 public cemeteries under category 1 and Rs 30,000 each to 5 public cemeteries under category 2.
Furthermore, Rs 1,00,000 was given for the construction of Hlimen Relief Camp where many families have left their homes due to the massive landslide that occurred on May 28; and Rs 10,000 given to Hortoki Joint YMA in the community search for a dead body.
It is worth mentioning that Mizoram faced several destructions across the districts after Cyclone Remal made a landfall on May 26, 2024 and the State was incapacitated with heavy rains, strong winds and massive landslides that destroyed many houses and killed 37 people. Four bodies have not been recovered.
