In a strong display of community solidarity against rising substance abuse, the School Education Department, District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), SP Office Lunglei, and Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan jointly organised a “Grand Rally Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Drug Trafficking” in Lunglei town on Wednesday, December 10 forenoon.
The rally saw the participation of around 600 students representing various schools across Lunglei. It was flagged off simultaneously from two starting points—Kikawn and Government High School, Chanmari—marking one of the largest student-led anti-drug demonstrations in the district.
Lalthansiami Hnamte, Civil Judge (Senior Division-II) of Lunglei Court, led the march from Government High School Chanmari, while Beikhaizi, SDO (Sadar), guided the procession from Kikawn. After the march, all participants converged at Saikuti Hall, where a comprehensive Drug Abuse Awareness Campaign was held.
The awareness programme featured a Legal Awareness session conducted by DLSA Advocate Z.D. Lalnunsanga, who stressed the legal implications of drug trafficking and possession. SI Vanlalfinga of the Excise & Narcotics Department delivered a detailed briefing on the harmful effects of drug abuse, highlighting the growing number of cases reported in the region. K. Lalfakzuala, President of YMA Sub-Headquarters, Lunglei, also addressed the gathering, underscoring the importance of collective responsibility in combating the drug crisis.
Adding a creative touch to the initiative, organisers held a music video competition for Primary, Middle, and High School categories under the theme “Rawlthar tang fan fan” (Youngsters, keep holding on strongly), encouraging students to raise awareness through art. Prizes were distributed to selected entries.
The event concluded with renewed calls for community vigilance, youth engagement, and stronger preventive efforts to curb drug abuse and illicit trafficking in the region.
