A delegation from NITI Aayog, led by Dr. Vinod K. Paul, visited Mizoram's Zoram Medical College and Hospital (ZMCH) on February 26.
A meeting, highlighting achievements of the college and the state's remarkable infant mortality rate of 3 per cent, was held in the presence of Mizoram Health Minister Lalrinpuii and Health Department Secretary Sangchhin Chinzah to discuss the institution’s progress, challenges, and future development.
During the meeting, ZMCH Director Dr. John Zohmingthanga provided an overview of the college’s establishment, growth, and ongoing needs. He stated that ZMCH was founded on August 7, 2018, and has since seen two batches graduate.
The institution currently employs 121 faculty members.
Dr. Zohmingthanga highlighted that ZMCH admits 100 students annually, with 70 per cent of seats reserved under the state quota, 15 per cent under the All India quota, and another 15 per cent for NRI students.
The hospital currently has 420 beds, with plans to increase capacity to 470. It is equipped with 24 ICU beds and nine operation theatres, while the number of paying cabins will be expanded from 10 to 14.
Additionally, a neurosurgeon is expected to join ZMCH in May.
He further mentioned that the hospital receives Rs 50 lakh per month under the PMJAY (Golden Card beneficiaries) scheme. ZMCH has also applied for MS and MD postgraduate courses for the 2025-26 academic year with NITI Aayog’s support.
However, additional critical medical equipment and human resources are required for the hospital’s 50-bed Critical Care Block.
Dr. Vinod K. Paul emphasised the need to investigate the high prevalence of HIV in Mizoram, particularly infections linked to drug use.
He also noted that the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare is launching a campaign to eradicate TB, malaria, leprosy, rubella, and measles.
Dr. Paul underscored the importance of prioritising primary healthcare by strengthening sub-centers and health and wellness centers. He also commended Mizoram’s infant mortality rate of 3 per cent, calling it a remarkable achievement.
