Three Primary Health Centres (PHCs) in Mizoram have been newly certified under India’s National Quality Assurance Standards (NQAS), marking another milestone in the state’s healthcare development.
With this recognition, Mizoram now has 34 Health & Wellness Centre-PHCs (HWC-PHCs) certified against its target of 57.
The newly certified facilities are Phullen PHC, Hnahlan PHC, and Reiek PHC, which scored 90.68%, 93.36%, and 90.76% respectively in the evaluation process. Notably, Reiek PHC is part of the Aspirational Block Programme (ABP), under which Mizoram has already achieved five state-level certifications and four national-level certifications out of seven targeted facilities.
Dr. Lily Chhakchhuak, Mission Director of the National Health Mission, stated that the certification is a testimony to the state’s commitment towards enhancing healthcare quality. Health Minister Lalrinpuii also stressed the importance of such recognitions, noting that certified government health centres provide reliable and accessible care to the public.
Currently, 47 government health facilities in Mizoram hold the prestigious NQAS national certification. Alongside this, 19 health centres and 21 HWC Sub-Centres have state-level certification, with four more awaiting national-level results.
The NQAS assessment process is conducted in three stages, culminating in a National External Assessment carried out by assessors from outside the state. To qualify, facilities must secure a minimum score of 70%. The evaluation includes multiple aspects such as patient safety, staff competence, affordability and accessibility of care, infection control, cleanliness, record-keeping, patient-friendly services, and environmental standards.
Officials noted that these certifications represent a step forward in building a stronger, people-centric healthcare system in Mizoram.
