J&K, August 5, 2019:

The Narendra Modi-led NDA Government has scrapped the Article 370 under the Indian Constitution which provides a special status to the residents of the state.

This has been announced by Union Home Minister Amit Shah at the Rajya Sabha today. This is a historic move by the Modi Government and comes amid heightened tensions in the valley.

Article 370 of the Indian constitution is an article that gave special status to the state of Jammu and Kashmir. As of 5 Aug, 2019, the article has been declared as abrogated by the Government of India, pending the signed approval of the President of India.

Under the proposed law that Amit Shah introduced in the Rajya Sabha, Jammu and Kashmir will now be a Union Territory now with legislature, and not a state. Ladakh to be a Union Territory without legislation.

Meanwhile, a Presidential Order to this effect has been passed:

There was an uproar in Rajya Sabha after resolution revoking Article 370 from J&K was moved by Home Minister Amit Shah.

Meanwhile, Congress leaders have decried the situation in the Valley. Ghulam Nabi Azad, Congress leader in the Rajya Sabha, said: "Entire valley is under curfew, political leaders including three former chief ministers are under house arrest. There is a war like situation in the state, so this should be discussed on priority."

It is to be mentioned that the Article 370 first came into existence in 1954.
