‘Didi’ Mamata Banerjee Leads Protest against ‘Citizenship Amendment Act’ in Bengal

West Bengal, December 17, 2019:

Trinamool Congress supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday led a massive protest march against the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Act on the streets of the capital city Kolkata.

With several hundred people taking part in the protest to oppose the recently imposed Act, ‘Didi’ was seen at the forefront of the 7 km-long march meant to express disdain for the contentious legislation. According to reports, leaders from Mamata’s TMC party formed a human chain, with an enormous crowd rallying behind.

At one point, Mamata told the mass gathering against the C(A)A that the Act and the NRC would only be implemented in Bengal over her “dead body”.

Since Friday, the ongoing protests have intensified with the agitators moving to the streets, burning tyres and as such, the normal lives of the people as well as railway and airway services in several parts of the country have been severely affected.

Meanwhile, the enactment of the C(A)A, after it was passed in the Rajya Sabha on December 11, has sparked massive protests in India, and also in several other countries, where people have shown their contempt for the Bill-turned-Act with demonstrations.
