A massive fire engulfed Rituraj Hotel near Falpatti Machhua in Central Kolkata on Tuesday, April 29 evening, claiming at least 14 lives and leaving several others injured or trapped. The blaze broke out around 8:15 p.m., prompting a swift response from the fire brigade and emergency services.
Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Kumar Verma confirmed the recovery of 14 bodies from the charred premises. “The fire is now under control. Rescue operations are continuing, and a special investigation team has been formed to ascertain the cause of the fire,” he stated while addressing the media at the site.
Though the exact origin of the fire remains unclear, authorities have launched a comprehensive investigation and are exploring all possible angles, including potential lapses in fire safety norms.
The incident has sparked strong political reactions. Union Minister and West Bengal BJP President Sukanta Majumdar took to X to express grief and urged the state administration to intensify rescue efforts and extend prompt medical and humanitarian assistance to the victims. He also called for a stringent review of fire safety compliance across the city.
"I urge the state administration to immediately rescue those affected, ensure their safety, and provide them with necessary medical and humanitarian assistance. Additionally, I appeal for a thorough review and stricter monitoring of fire safety measures to prevent such tragic incidents in the future," Majumdar posted.
West Bengal Congress President Subhankar Sarkar blamed the Kolkata Municipal Corporation for failing to enforce essential safety protocols. Speaking to ANI, he said, “This is a tragic incident. A lot of people are still trapped inside. There was no safety or security. I don’t understand what the municipal corporation is doing.”
