At least 7 newborns killed after massive fire breaks out at Delhi hospital

A massive fire broke out at a children's hospital in Delhi's Vivek Vihar area on May 25, killing at least seven newborns.

 

According to the Delhi Fire Services (DFS), five newborns were rescued and promptly hospitalised, however, one child died in the ICU on the morning of May 26.

 

The Vivek Vihar police station received a PCR call at night regarding the blaze at the New Born Baby Care Hospital, as well as an adjacent building, following which 16 fire tenders rushed to the site. 

 

Meanwhile, officials also informed that at least 11 newborns were rescued after the fire broke out. It is suspected that the fire erupted after a blast in one of the oxygen cylinders at the facility.

 

According to DFS chief Atul Garg, the rescue operation went on into midnight. "A fire call from Baby Care Centre, near ITI, Block B of Vivek Vihar area was received. A total of nine fire tenders were dispatched," he said.

 

Fire department officials said that the fire was doused, and the rescued infants were shifted to a nearby hospital, adding, "The exact cause of the fire cannot be ascertained at this point and further details will be shared.”
