‘Home Minister is dodging his statement’: Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi slams Amit Shah

Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi on Wednesday, August 12 criticised Union Home Minister Amit Shah over his remarks on discussions in Parliament and outside the House concerning education and the student movement, alleging that the Home Minister was avoiding a pending statement.

Gogoi said the government was attempting to create an impression that there had been no substantive discussion in Parliament or at Jantar Mantar on issues related to education and the student movement.

“The government, and particularly the Home Minister, are trying to spread an illusion that there was no discussion inside the House on education, at Jantar Mantar, or regarding the student movement,” Gogoi said.

He cited the parliamentary debate on the bill dealing with paper leaks, saying the legislation had been discussed extensively for two days. According to Gogoi, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, opposition MPs and several BJP members participated in the debate.

Gogoi questioned Shah's absence from the discussion, asking why the Union Home Minister had not participated in the two-day debate.

The Congress MP further alleged that Shah was reluctant to make a statement in the House and was attempting to avoid addressing the issue directly.

“The Union Home Minister doesn't want to give a statement; he shies away from giving a statement,” Gogoi said, adding that Shah's statement was still pending.

Gogoi alleged that the Home Minister was using various reasons to avoid responding in Parliament, and accused him of attempting to “run away from the House”.
