Indian Army launches knitting hub to boost livelihoods in remote border areas

Indian Army inaugurated a Knitting Centre in Thegu, a village along the Indo-China border in East Sikkim. The initiative, launched on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan, reflects the values of protection, care, and mutual respect associated with the festival.

The centre, fully equipped with modern sewing machines, work tables, chairs, and essential training accessories, aims to provide local women with valuable tailoring and knitting skills. This vocational training is designed to promote self-reliance, create livelihood opportunities, and boost economic independence among women in the region.

Local women from Thegu and neighbouring villages expressed heartfelt appreciation for the Army’s efforts, calling the project both timely and transformative. They highlighted how such skill-based initiatives can open new income avenues in areas with limited employment opportunities.

The Indian Army emphasised that community-focused projects like this reaffirm their commitment not only to safeguarding the nation’s borders but also to nurturing the well-being and aspirations of border communities. Officials noted that the Knitting Centre is envisioned as a sustainable platform for empowering women and strengthening the socio-economic fabric of the region.
