Landslide strikes Sikkim's Gyalshing district, claims life of panchayat president

A tragic landslide struck Sardung Lama Gaon in the Maneybong-Dentam constituency of Gyalshing district on Saturday evening, claiming the life of 47-year-old Rajen Gurung, the Panchayat President of Sardong Lunzick Gram Panchayat Unit.

The incident occurred around 7 p.m. when Gurung was reportedly trapped under debris near his residence and succumbed to his injuries at the site.

Reacting to the tragic loss, Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang expressed deep sorrow over the demise. In his condolence message, he described Gurung as a committed leader whose service and contributions towards the welfare of his community would be remembered with respect.

“I am deeply saddened to learn about the untimely demise of Shri Rajen Gurung… His selfless service and tireless contributions will be remembered with deep gratitude,” the Chief Minister said, adding that the government and people of Sikkim stand in solidarity with the bereaved family.

Tamang also assured that the district administration and concerned authorities have promptly responded and are extending all necessary support to the grieving family and the affected area.
