Sikkim’s Lok Sabha MP Indra Hang Subba, called for urgent government intervention to address the depletion of spring water sources in the Himalayan region, particularly in Sikkim.
Speaking during the discussion on the Ministry of Jal Shakti’s 2025-26 budget allocations, he stressed the need for dedicated funding towards extensive Springshed development under the Dhara Vikas Yojana.
Highlighting environmental concerns, Subba also pointed out the looming threat posed by Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs), which have the potential to cause severe destruction. He urged the ministry to allocate sufficient funds for research and mitigation strategies to tackle this growing risk.
Further, he cited the successful management of Plastic Waste Management Units in Yuksam and Padamchen, suggesting that their operational model could be replicated nationwide to improve waste management efficiency.
His appeal comes amid growing concerns over climate change-driven water scarcity and glacial hazards in the Himalayan states.
