Two individuals were swept away by strong currents while swimming in the Rohtak River in West Sikkim, on June 14 evening but were rescued by alert local residents.
The sudden surge in water level, triggered by ongoing heavy rainfall, created flash flood-like conditions that caught the swimmers off guard.
The incident comes as Sikkim continues to be battered by intense rain and landslides. The Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for North Sikkim and Gangtok, warning of potential flooding and landslips in vulnerable areas.
Authorities have confirmed that most rivers across the state are flowing above the danger level. The Sikkim government has urged residents to avoid venturing near rivers or streams, especially during this period of heightened weather activity.
Rainfall resumed across several parts of the state on Saturday night, further aggravating the risk of flash floods and landslides in already affected regions.
Emergency services remain on high alert, and locals are advised to remain cautious.
