Guwahati, October 8, 2018:

Shooter Tushar Mane clinched the first medal, a silver, in the ongoing 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Teenager Thangjam Tababi Devi from Manipur also bagged a silver medal in the women’s 44kg category judo event.

Mane won the silver medal in men’s 10 metre air rifle event. The gold went to Grigorii Shamakov of Russia. Tababi had lost to Venezuela’s Maria Giminez.

By winning the silver medal, she became India’s first judo medalist at the Olympic level. Tababi Devi, an Asian cadet champion, lost 0-11, also conceding a penalty point in the process, in the summit clash that lasted a little over two minutes on Sunday night.

India has never won an Olympic medal in judo either at the senior or the youth level.
