Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma, founder of the Tipra Motha Party on April 6, appealed to people to refrain from violence during the ongoing election process for the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) and urged them to expose any attempts at bribery or voter intimidation.
Elections to the 28-member TTAADC are scheduled to be held on April 12.
In a video message, the Tipra Motha Party founder said he had received reports of violence in certain areas and cautioned that such incidents could tarnish the image of the Tiprasa community.
“My appeal to the entire Tiprasa community is that if, during elections, you fight among yourselves, use abusive language, or engage in violence, it will only malign the image of the entire community,” he said.
Debbarma noted that while a small section of political workers may be involved in violence, the repercussions are borne by the larger community.
“Only a small percentage of political workers are involved in such activities, but the entire community’s name gets tarnished—not only in Tripura but beyond,” he said.
He also pointed out that both perpetrators and victims of such violence often belong to the same community, worsening its impact on society.
Urging restraint, he asked people not to take the law into their own hands.
“If anyone is distributing money, do not pick up a stick—pick up your mobile phone. Record it, share it, and report it to the police. Your responsibility is to expose wrongdoing, not engage in violence,” he said.
He added that while elections are periodic, the consequences of violence can have lasting social impact.
“Violence divides society, turns friends into enemies, and harms the reputation of our state,” he said.
