Tension escalated in Takarjala under Sepahijala district of Tripura on April 10 after violent clashes broke out between workers of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Tipra Motha Party ahead of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) elections.
According to police, the violence began earlier in the day during an election campaign by Tipra Motha Party workers. An argument between rival party workers reportedly escalated into a scuffle, leaving several people injured. Police intervened and initially brought the situation under control.
However, tensions flared up again when a large group of Tipra Motha Party supporters allegedly gathered outside the residence of BJP candidate Nirmal Debbarma and attempted to attack his house. The mob reportedly vandalised the property, prompting a heavy deployment of security forces in the area.
Sepahijala District Superintendent of Police Bijoy Debbarma sustained serious injuries during the violence. Police said the officer was attacked with slingshots while trying to control the situation amid lathi charge to disperse the crowd.
“The gathering was massive and the situation turned volatile. Despite efforts to maintain law and order, the SP was injured during the clash,” a police official said.
Authorities have since intensified security arrangements in Takarjala, with additional forces deployed to prevent further escalation. The Assam Rifles has also been deployed in the area to restore normalcy.
The Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council elections are scheduled to be held on April 12, with Friday marking the last day of campaigning.
