Itanagar, May 21, 2019:

The DC of Khonsa district has confirmed that eleven persons, including sitting Arunachal Pradesh MLA Tirong Aboh, have been killed in the militant ambush earlier in the morning today near Ajay Rajkumar Commentary, Tea Plantation Khonsa in Arunachal Pradesh's Tirap district at around 11:30 am earlier in the morning today by suspected NSCN militants.

Speaking exclusively to Inside Northeast, Tirap DC P.N. Thungon has confirmed that at least two persons have been killed in the ambush. He further added that two persons are critically injured and are fighting for their lives. The DC has also stated that investigations are underway to track down the culprits behind the attack to justice.

The attack took place at Bogapani village of Tirap district in Arunachal Pradesh. It may be mentioned that Aboh was seeking re-election from Khonsa West Assembly seat on an NPP ticket.

Sources said that the MLA and his family were travelling in an SUV from Upper Assam’s Dibrugarh district to Khonsa when the incident took place. According to reports, Aboh and his younger son died on the spot.

It may be mentioned that the MLA had earlier been threatened by separatist group Nationalist Socialist Council of Nagalim (Isaak Muivah) (NSCN-IM).

Meghalaya Chief Minister and NPP president Conrad K Sangma has confirmed the attack and took to micro-blogging site Twitter to condemn the “brutal” attack on his partymate. He also appealed to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi as well as Home Minister Rajnath Singh to take “action” against the criminals.

Sangma wrote: “The NPP is extremely shocked and saddened by the news of the death of its MLA Shri Tirong Aboh (Arunachal Pradesh) and his family. We condemn the brutal attack and urge @rajnathsingh and @PMOIndia to take action against those responsible for such attack,” Sangma further tweeted.

The election was held in the two Constituencies of Arunachal — Arunachal East and West — during first phase of elections on April 11. The result of Assembly Elections will be announced on May 23.
