A massive fire broke out in the early hours of today at the oldest market in Hayuliang town, Anjaw district, reducing over 15 shops to ashes. The fire, which ignited around 5 am, rapidly spread from one shop to engulf the entire row, causing extensive property damage. However, no casualties have been reported so far.
Authorities have initiated an inquiry to determine the cause of the fire, which remains uncertain. Due to the absence of a fire station in Hayuliang, fire services had to be dispatched from the district headquarters in Hawai, located over an hour and a half away. By the time the fire brigade reached the scene, the market was already reduced to rubble.
Local MLA and Minister for Women & Child Development, Dasanglu Pul, has assured all possible assistance to the affected shopkeepers. Speaking to India Today, Anjaw Deputy Commissioner Millo Kojin stated that a loss assessment is underway, and interim relief measures have commenced.
Additional Deputy Commissioner of Hayuliang, Julity Mihu, confirmed that the entire market, primarily constructed of wood and planks, was completely destroyed. The Indian Army assisted in containing the fire, preventing further spread. Relief efforts will be carried out based on assessments by the District Disaster Management Officer (DDMO).
