“Arunachal Assembly among best in India,” says Speaker on 50 years of indigenous governance

Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly Speaker Tesam Pongte described the state’s legislature as "one of the best in the country" during a national seminar held at the APLA premises in Itanagar.

The seminar, titled “50 Years Journey in Arunachal: Indigenous Governance & Modern Legislature,” brought together eminent scholars, political leaders, academicians, activists, and students to reflect on the state's democratic evolution and unique indigenous governance systems.

The seminar was introduced by Jumyir Basar, Director of the Arunachal Institute of Tribal Studies. The keynote speakers included renowned sociologist and anthropologist Prof. Virginius Xaxa, RGU Vice-Chancellor Prof. S.K. Nayak, APLA Secretary Tadar Meena, and former Home Minister James Lowangcha Wanglat.

Distinguished participants such as Prof. Nani Bath, senior activist Jarjum Ete, Alipurduar University Vice Chancellor Prof. Sarit K. Chaudhuri, Padma Shri awardee and author Mamang Dai, TRIHMS Director Dr. Moji Jini, senior journalist Tongam Rina, and CCF Samuel Changkija added weight to the discussions.

Topics explored included the making of the Arunachal Assembly, tribal autonomy and political transitions, women’s political representation, indigenous literature, evolving tribal dynamics, public health achievements, environmental governance, and media accountability.

The event also saw lively participation from university and college students across the state, who engaged in interactive sessions with the speakers. The seminar provided a vibrant platform to celebrate Arunachal’s 50-year journey and envision a future rooted in both tradition and modern legislative practices.
