Arunachal: First late Dorjee Khandu Memorial District Level Archery Tournament kicks off

The inaugural edition of the Late Dorjee Khandu Memorial District Level Archery Tournament was officially launched today in Tawang.

The event was inaugurated by Arunachal Pradesh’s Minister of Sports & Youth Affairs, Kento Jini, in the presence of Lumla MLA Tsering Lhamu, Deputy Commissioner of Tawang, senior government officials, and public leaders.

The tournament is being organized by the Tawang District Archery Association and is sponsored by Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu and his family. The primary objective of the tournament is to promote traditional archery while integrating Olympic-style training to enhance the skills of young archers in the region.

"For the past year, youths have been receiving training in Olympic-style archery to strengthen their skills, with the goal of competing in national and international events in the near future," said an official from the organizing committee.

A total of 33 teams are participating in the tournament, with 30 teams competing in the traditional archery category and three teams in the Junior Olympic-style category. The five-day event, which commenced today, will continue until March 19.

The initiative has received widespread appreciation, with many seeing it as a crucial step in preserving indigenous sports traditions while preparing young athletes for greater competitive platforms. The tournament not only honours the legacy of former Chief Minister Dorjee Khandu but also serves as a platform for aspiring archers to showcase their skills and gain recognition at a larger level.
