Arunachal Pradesh Health and Family Welfare Minister Biyuram Wahge has launched an extensive awareness campaign against drug abuse and HIV/AIDS using drama performances in local dialects across all districts of the state.
The campaign, themed “Nashye Se Inkar, Zindagi Se Pyaar” (Say No to Drugs, Yes to Life), aims to spread awareness in a more relatable and impactful manner. Speaking to India Today, Wahge said that engaging communities through drama was one of the most effective ways to reach the youth, who are most vulnerable to drug abuse.
“Drugs remain the biggest concern for our young generation, and many HIV cases also spread through syringe use. By creating engaging narratives in local dialects, drama can convey the devastating impact of substance abuse, break misconceptions, and foster empathy. Parents, too, must take a proactive role in steering their children away from drugs,” Wahge stressed.
The Minister emphasised that the campaign not only raises awareness but also empowers young artists by providing them a platform to use their talent for social reform. Alongside stage dramas, the initiative incorporates street plays (nukkad nataks) and community dialogues to reinforce the message at the grassroots.

Arunachal Pradesh has been grappling with a serious drug crisis. A 2019 national survey placed the state among the top three to four in India for substance abuse. To address the challenge, the state government has introduced a psychoactive substances policy, established the Arunachal Pradesh Drug De-Addiction Society (APDDS), and set up rehabilitation centres.
HIV cases remain another pressing concern, particularly in districts like Namsai and Papum Pare, including the Itanagar Capital Region, which have recorded the highest numbers. Wahge called for collective action, stating that combating drugs and HIV requires the combined effort of communities, artists, healthcare workers, and law enforcement agencies.
The Health Minister also raised concerns about the encroachment of land earmarked for the expansion of Tomo Riba Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (TRIHMS). He assured that the matter would be resolved amicably with the cooperation of the district administration.
