Arunachal Pradesh: Galo community unites in colorful Mopin festival celebrations

The Galo community of Arunachal Pradesh celebrated Mopin festival today, a vibrant display of their rich cultural heritage and traditions. The festivities took place across the state, with particular enthusiasm observed in the capital city of Itanagar, where the Mopin ground was transformed into a hub of cultural activity.

The festival holds profound significance for the Galo tribe, symbolizing their aspirations for wealth, prosperity, and the preservation of their cultural identity. It is celebrated annually during the month of April, captivates the Galo community, with celebrations continuing throughout the month.

In Itanagar, the heart of the festivities, Galo denizens adorned in traditional attire filled the Mopin ground, adding to the spectacle of the celebration. The event garnered distinguished guests, including Governor of Arunachal Pradesh Lt. General KT Parnaik and First Lady Smt. Anagha Parnaik, who graced the occasion as Chief Guests.

Addressing the gathered community members, Governor Parnaik extended his greetings for the auspicious occasion of Mopin and invoked blessings from Mopin Goddess Anyi Pinku Pinte for agricultural abundance, livestock proliferation, and environmental preservation.

The Governor commended the Galo community for their steadfast commitment to preserving their indigenous cultural heritage, emphasizing the importance of cultural preservation in the face of modernization.

A highlight of the celebration was the mesmerizing 'popir dance', performed by female folk, which captivated the audience with its rhythmic movements and traditional chants. The dance, accompanied by the sweet melodies of Ja-Jin-Ja and Baryi folk songs, echoed the vibrant spirit of the festival.

Margam Ori, General Secretary of the organizing committee, emphasized the importance of preserving Galo traditions and cultural practices, urging community members to safeguard their identity amidst changing times.

Guests of honor, including senior members of the Galo community, recalled the efforts of pioneers in preserving and promoting Galo culture, underscoring the importance of events like Mopin in fostering cultural cohesion and pride.

The festivities also featured cultural presentations depicting the rich cultural heritage of Galo society, with 15 Popir Teams from different parts of the state showcasing their talents and traditions.
