Arunachal: Violence erupts in Itanagar town after protestors turn violent over APPSC paper leak row

Amid the ongoing bandh announced by aspirants, a scuffle broke out between armed forces and agitated students, on February 17 morning near the Raj Bhawan area of Itanagar, the capital of Arunachal Pradesh.

The situation has become tense in the city as the protestors took a violent approach.

The Arunachal Pradesh Public service Commission (APPSC) aspirants have called for an indefinite bandh from February 17.

Several videos of the incidents have surfaced wherein it can be seen that everything is halted at National Highway (NH) 52 which passes through Itanagar.

The videos clearly show that the protestors are freely walking on the road with sticks in their hand and have blocked the entire road.

Speaking over the matter, Arunachal Pradesh Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chukhu Apa said that security personnel used tear gas in a bid to control the situation.

''In a bid to control the situation, security personnel used tear gas and resort baton charges upon the protesters,'' Apa added.

Following the violence in the state, the swearing-in ceremony of APPSC's new chairman and its members which was the main demand of aspirants was cancelled.

Earlier, the administration had imposed Section 144 CrPc on February 16 and the Executive Magistrates were deployed for maintaining law and order in different sectors of the Capital Complex.
