Rajnath Singh inaugurates historic Nechiphu Tunnel in Arunachal Pradesh

In a momentous occasion for the northeastern region of India, the Nechiphu Tunnel, a pioneering infrastructure project, was officially inaugurated on September 12 by Union Minister Rajnath Singh.

This groundbreaking endeavor, situated in the picturesque state of Arunachal Pradesh, marks a significant milestone, not only for the state but for the entire northeastern region.

"I am very excited because the Nechiphu tunnel is the first of its kind not only in Arunachal but in the entire northeast. This will make the lives of people living in Tawang easy as well as benefit the Indian armed forces. This tunnel will also play a pivotal role in boosting tourism," expressed Arunachal Chief Minister, Pema Khandu.

He said that the Nechiphu Tunnel project addresses a longstanding issue in the region. The area surrounding the tunnel has historically been plagued by dense fog, leading to numerous accidents and tragic loss of lives. In 2016, the idea for this transformative tunnel was conceptualized, and it subsequently received approval from the Government of India.

''A total of 90 such visionary projects are set to be inaugurated, with a staggering 36 of them located within the landscapes of Arunachal Pradesh. This is a testament to the unwavering commitment and focus exhibited by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Central government towards developing and uplifting remote areas in the northeastern part of the country,'' he added.

He further said that the Nechiphu Tunnel, which has been meticulously engineered, not only provides a lifeline to the local residents of Tawang but also offers strategic advantages to the Indian armed forces, ensuring smoother connectivity in this vital border region.

"In the coming days, we can look forward to more such transformative projects in Arunachal Pradesh, thanks to the commendable focus demonstrated by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Centre," Khandu said.

Singh virtually inaugurated this Nechiphu tunnel of 500 metres in length situated at an altitude of 5700 feet in the West Kameng district of Arunachal which connects the Tawang district of Arunachal Pradesh near Indo China border. This tunnel is been made by a Gujarat-based company at an estimated cost of 114 crores.

The Defence Minister also dedicated 90 infrastructure projects to the country constructed by Border Road Organisation (BRO) with a cost of Rs 2941 crore at a ceremony to be organized at Devak Bridge in Jammu today, Tuesday, September 12.

As per an official statement, the projects have been constructed in 10 border States and UTs of the Northern and North-Eastern regions.
