Siang project a matter of national security, not just hydropower: Arunachal CM

Reaffirming the strategic importance of the proposed Siang Multipurpose Project, Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu has said the project is not just aimed at generating hydropower, but also plays a crucial role in safeguarding India’s national interests along the sensitive border regions.

Addressing the media, CM Khandu underscored the dual objectives of the project — boosting water and energy security while strengthening India’s defence preparedness.

“The Siang project is a national priority — not just for hydropower, but for national security,” he said.

Khandu added that before taking the project forward, a Pre-Feasibility Report (PFR) will be conducted to accurately determine the extent of submergence and potential impacts on local areas.

Importantly, the Chief Minister assured that no step will be taken without full transparency and public participation.

“Public hearings and the concerns of locals will be central to any future decision. We will not bypass the voices of the people,” he stated.

The statement comes as the project gains renewed attention amid border sensitivities and increasing focus on tapping Arunachal’s vast hydropower potential for both energy and strategic advantages.
