"Many of the jailed inmates' health deteriorates during their stay. The condition is pathetic. On February 11, an inmate, Karuna Saikia, who had been serving his term since the past 17 years, died due to lack of basic medical facilities," said Akhil Gogoi, while talking about his improving health condition after treatment at Gauhati Medical College & Hospital (GMCH).
The peasant leader, who is known to highlight important issues, this time did not refrain from revealing the deteriorating health conditions of the jail inmates. "The food provided is not at all. Moreover the jail authorities do not send the inmates for medical checkup on time.
"I was bed-ridden yesterday but my health condition has improved. I am also feeling better. This has been possible only because of the court's order, media's pressure and voice of the public. I am grateful to each and everyone of you.
