Assam CM reacts to 'fake encounter' allegations, says anyone attacking police will get befitting reply

GUWAHATI: Reacting to allegations on the 'encounter spree' Assam Chief Minister on Wednesday stated that the state will follow zero tolerance policy.

"This policy will continue and anybody who tries to attack Assam police will get befitting reply. This war will go on and I will not compromise till the moment I am on this chair", said the Chief Minister on the third day of budget session.

Reacting to allegations about police doing fake encounters, the Chief Minister further said that a police official has to shoot as self protection.

"I can't tell the police personnel to not defend themselves so that I am not criticized in the Assembly", said Sarma further reacting to allegations.

Talking about the recent seizure of drugs in the state, the Chief Minister said, "After taking charge as the Chief Minister, I held a meeting with the police department where we discussed about the issues of illegal drugs and trafficking and cow smuggling in the state. I directed the team to work with zero tolerance against these acts".

Commenting on the recent encounters, the CM said, "1 was killed in an encounter while trying to escape and 7 others were injured. These people are generally under the influence of drugs hence they are always aggressive. These people have the capacity to destroy thousands and thousands of lives. You can imagine the mentality of such people."

"A police official has to shoot in self- defence", stressed the Chief Minister.

Reacting to the 'encounter' issue, Sibasagar MLA Akhil had said that the encounters should be stopped immediately. He even accused the state government of protecting drug mafias.

It is noteworthy that a complaint has been filed with the NHRC accusing the Assam Police of violating human rights. The complaint claims that more than 20 encounters have been reported since May this year.
