GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma urged all affluent families of the state to give up ration cards for those who genuinely need the benefits of the cards.

He said ration cards are meant exclusively for the economically weaker sections of society.

CM Sarma said that ever since the coalition BJP government assumed office in Assam in early May, the government has undertaken numerous initiatives to improve the condition of the state's people, particularly those living below the poverty line.

With the ration cards issued by the Food and Civil Supplies Department of Assam, financially weak families have been able to purchase food grains at cheaper prices.

CM Sarma appreciated their moves and further urged the affluent to give up their cards to let the needy people to avail the benifits.

"I humbly request all affluent families of Assam to voluntarily give up their ration cards so that the benefits can reach those who genuinely need them," CM Sarma tweeted.
