Assam Elections 2021: 90 crorepati candidates in the fray in phase III of polling of

GUWAHATI: The fate of the wealthiest and the poorest among the 941 candidates of Assam assembly elections will be sealed in last phase of polls on Tuesday.

The wealthiest among all, Manaranjan Brahma of United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL), is worth Rs 268 crore, while Sabendra Basumatary, a Voters Party International candidate from Bongaigaon, is the poorest with assets worth only Rs 2500.

Brahma is also the richest-ever candidate in the history of the Assam Assembly elections.

Both Brahma’s Kokrajhar West seat and Basumatary’s Bongaigaon will go to polls on Tuesday.

There are a total of 90 multi-millionaire candidates in the fray in the third phase of the Assam assembly elections. The data has been compiled by Association for Democratic Reforms, which analysed the election affidavits of 337 candidates of the third phase, in its Assam Election Watch.

Hajo Assam Jatiya Parishad candidate Dulu Ahmed is second in the list of the wealthiest with declared assets worth Rs 43 crore. Jalukbari’s Congress candidate Romen Chandra Borthakur, worth declared assets Rs 31 crore, is the third richest.

As many as 25 candidates contesting in the third phase have declared assets worth above Rs 5 crore.

The average of assets per candidate contesting in the third phase is Rs 2.20 crore.

The analysis has found that there has been a quantum leap in the number of crorepati candidates from 22 per cent in 2016 elections to 28 per cent in 2021.

The percentage of candidates with declared criminal records has also doubled from seven per cent in 2016 to 15 per cent this election.
