The special investigation team (SIT) probing into the hooch tragedy in Assam that took place in the month of February filed charge sheet against 41 accused on Thursday. The accused were produced before CJM, Golaghat.

In its 1,000 pages charge sheet, the SIT has charged 15 accused under Sections 120B, i.e. punishment for criminal conspiracy, Section 328 i.e. causing hurt by means of poison, etc with intent to commit an offence and Section 304 i.e. punishment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder of the IPC along with Section 55 of the Assam Excise Act.
The rest 26 accused under Section 55 of the Assam Excise Act, i.e. penalty for attempting to alter any denatured spirit that may be used for human consumption.
The CJM court registered a case, PRC No. 418/19. It also summoned all the accused to appear before it on June 11.
Addressing the media, the Superintendent of Police, Golaghat said that the SIT has filed its report within the 90-day stipulated time against 41 accused.
It is to be mentioned that in the month of February Assam witnessed a series of death at Salmara Tea Garden in Golaghat district. Over hundreds persons lost their lives after consuming spurious liquor.
Following this, an SIT was formed by the Assam Government to probe the hooch tragedy and was given a time period of 90 days to investigate and submit the reports. As a part of which 41 accused were produced before the court on the basis of the statements recorded by 65 eye-witnesses.
